Deployment

There was a large grove of trees to the right the front the column with some ruins on the other side. Next to the trees was an earthen barrier and the two effectively blocked line of sight to the column's flank from that side. Various wrecked vehicles, several ruined fountains and scattered trees littered the open park through which the column was advancing. The Wolves were advancing on a, Imperial checkpoint. There was a large museum/gift shop building that had been converted into a command post on the right and a hill fortified with sand bags on the left. Each had a small open topped pillbox in front of it. There was only about 6-8 inches between the two pillboxes making and effective choke point.
My brother deployed his Space Wolves in the following order: blood claws 1, blood claws 2 with rune priest in their rhino, Venerable Dreadnaught, Grey Hunters 2, Long fangs, Grey Hunters 2 in their Razorback, bikers, Whirlwind.
My rolls for starting units were excellent and I got everything but the Ogryns and Squad 2. Russ 1 was placed hull-down behind the left pillbox while Russ 2 was put on the right of the command post where it could see anything approaching the checkpoint. The Command Squad deployed behind the command post in their chimera while squad 1's chimera hid behind the hill while the squad itself took positions on the hill. Squad 5 deployed in the right hand pillbox. Squads 3 and 4 deployed on each long board edge in hopes of causing havoc with their meltaguns against the vehicles in the column.

Introduction

Major Drakon Thanar surveyed the column of marines as they trundled through the devastated park towards the seemingly innocent checkpoint. They would reach him in about five minutes. He reflected on senseless destruction of war, it had taken this once peaceful and vibrant park and turned it into battlefield. Craters and destroyed vehicles littered the grassy fields and the memorials and great green trees were scarred and burned with las and bolt shots. "And I'm about to damage it even more," he muttered bitterly to himself. But those were his orders, to prevent any reinforcements from reaching the battle at the Saint Elizabeth Eclesiarchy Chapel.
I'll make sure its restored to its former glory once we've liberated this world from the tyranny of the corrupt Imperial government he vowed as he turned to his second in command, "Captain Rastalan tell the Russ's to hold there fire until the front of the column reaches that group trees there".
Hefting his honor blade onto his shoulder he stepped into his command chimera. Picking up the master vox inside he addressed his waiting troops. "Men, we are about be thrown into battle once more against our fellow man. Remember that in battle there is no room for hesitance or doubt. Do not let your compassion cloud your mind or we will fail and there will no hope of liberating this planet from the corrupt Lords of Terra. No chance to bring the people of this world into the Empire where they can work for the Greater Good instead of laboring endlessly to fatten the coffers of evil governors who care nothing for their peoples troubles. In the name of the Emperor we shall lead these people out of the shadows and into the light of the Empire where they will be able to worship Him without the fear of tyranny or Inquisition. For the Greater good! For the Emperor!" Cheers echoed in the steel hull of the chimera as he finished.
Captain Rastalan leaned over grinning and whispered, "No way you made that up on the fly, you planned it out ahead of time". With a chuckle Drakon replied, "Your just jealous because you're a boorish jerk lacking any knowledge of how to spark the hearts of men". "Aha trying to change the subject a sure sign of guilt," Rastalan retorted. Both men laughed though the mood turned grim again as soon as they looked out at the advancing marines only a minute away now.
With a silent prayer to the Emperor for the souls of the men on both sides who were about to die he waited for the advancing column to reach the stand of trees.

Turn 1 Gue'vassa

Rune Priest Sven Ironclaw looked out the hatch of the rhino at the checkpoint. Strange that there would be that many guardsmen at a simple checkpoint and also the presence of the Leman Russ was odd. Why weren't rushing to defend the chapel? As the rhino neared a large stand of trees he was able to see a second Russ on the far side of the command post. What was going on? His questions were answered with the closest Russ opened fire blowing apart six of the leading bloodclaws. Chimeras drove out from behind the hill and command post gunning down several more. Looking to the sides he saw small squads breaking cover and running towards the column.

Turn 1 Space Wolves

"Advance!" yelled Sven as the blood claws regrouped and the rhino sped forward towards the checkpoint. Ducking back inside the hatch he rapidly took stock of the tactical situation. He quickly rattled of orders to the stunned column, "Brother Kiel, take out the squad on the right. Brother Yarin destroy the squad on the left then flank that Russ. Everyone else provide covering fire. Slay the traitors in the name of the Emperor!" He saw Brother Kiel's Grey Hunters moving and firing on the carapace armored traitors but didn't see any of them drop. "For Russ!" Brother Yarin's squad screamed as their bikes rushed towards the guardsmen running towards the column. Bolters blazing the bikers closed in on the traitors, felling one.

Turn 2 Gue'vassa

Drakon watched from his chimera's turret as the Whirlwind moved to the side of the tank traps and out of his sight. Lascannon and missiles flew at his lines from the marines and squad 1's chimera lurched to a stop as it took a direct hit from the Long Fangs. "Squad 2 move to support squad 4 and take out that Whirlwind," he ordered. Plasma streaked from squad 5 into the approaching rhino blowing it apart in a series rippling explosions. "Take out the survivors!" Drakon yelled as he brought the heavy stubber into line and spraying the surviving Blood Claws with a hail of bullets. Hellgun and plasma shots from squad 1 quickly joined his as shot after shot ripped into the billowing smoking. The Ogryns chimera drove past squad 3 and unloaded. Vezdrog's augmented brain raced as he poked his head around the hull of the chimera. Spying a group of footslogging Grey Hunters through the smoke the chimera was discharging, he blasted one down his ripper gun while ordering his squad to form up on him. Sergeant Grelf of 4th squad charged his squad towards the rapidly approaching bikes. One of the screaming Blood Claws was incinerated by a meltagun blast while more shots whizzed around the bikers. Out of the corner of his eye he saw 2nd squad's chimera drive up behind his men and unload.

Turn 2 Space Wolves

Squad 3 was caught out in the open as rockets whistled down and exploded in their midst with deadly accuracy. Brother Kiel smiled grimly as the Ogryns were showered with shrapnel from the shells. "Don't assault them," he yelled at his Grey Hunters as they drew their blades in preparation. "We have to support the Blood Claws," he ordered as his men complied and ran past the Ogryns, not pausing as the rapid fired their bolters into the squad downing two of the already wounded beasts. Flat down in the wreckage of the Rhino with the rest of his squad Sven Ironclaw summoned a blinding flurry of driving snow as he screamed into his comm for support. "Take out that damn chimera its got us pinned here," he bellowed as heavy bolter and multi-laser rounds stitched their way through the smoke and snow towards his position.
Firing round after round from the pintle mounted heavy stubber Drakon felt a tingle at the back of his mind. Recognizing the sensation he yelled out his warning even as he jumped from the turret. Two seconds later a krak missile flew from the column, impacting the chimeras fuel cells. The tank erupted in blossoming fireball that washed over the ducking members of 5th squad in a wave of blazing heat and flame. Major Thanar rolled back onto his feet and sprinted to the rear of the chimera as lascannon shots flew by slamming into the Russ and knocking its crew to the floor. As he rounded the smoldering tank he watched Captain Rastalan tending to a moaning trooper. Turning his head the captain said, "The others are fine. I'm just glad his flamer tanks didn't go off. Now, help me him into cover". Nodding Drakon help lift the burned trooper and carry him into some bushes behind the command post.
Brother Yarin and the other biker raised their meltaguns and snapped off shots that went wide as they roared past 2nd squads chimera. Turning to assault the four-man squad he howled with victory as a blast of super-heated plasma incinerated over half the squad unloading from the transport, send the survivors fleeing away. Gunning his engines he charged at the sergeant leading the squad.
Jumping aside Sergeant Grelf parried the screaming Blood Claws over extended blow and slipped a slice at the torso of the marine, which glanced off the armor. Around him the other Gue'vassa fought the other biker to a standstill.

Gue'vassa Turn 3

Sergeant Tanik of 5th squad directed his squads fire into flurry of snow and smoke surrounding the survivors from the destroyed rhino. He couldn't confirm any kills but the immense volume of plasma and hellgun shots pouring into the convoluted mess of acrid smoke and snow from 1st and 5th squads must be hitting something. Russ 2's battle cannon fired a shell into the area and the storm abruptly ceased. Peering over the lip of the pillbox into the dissipating smoke he saw only the broken bodies of marines strewn about the wreckage of the rhino.
Bellowing with rage and blasting away with their ripper guns the Ogryns slammed into the Grey Hunters. Brother Kiel desperately dodged and parried the blows of a charging Ogryn. To his left Brother Gravick has bludgeoned to the ground by a particularly massive Ogryn whose skull was disfigured by multiple surgical implants. Another Grey Hunter was gunned down and trampled into the dust under the weight of the charging Ogryns.
Second squad's chimera snapped off a few ineffective shots at the Whirlwind as it circled around behind it. The Ogryn's chimera drove towards the Long Fangs its heavy flamers scouring the ground in front of them but not reaching the marines.
Sergeant Grelf ducked a blow from the Blood Claw's chainsword. He was hitting repeatedly but couldn't seem to penetrate that damn power armor. Beside him the other biker slashed Trooper Merklin across the chests. Shrieking in agony and bleeding profusely he fell screaming to the ground. "Stand Fast! Stand Fast! He bellowed and his remaining troopers held their ground.
1st squads chimera moved between the two pillboxes, effectively blocking the road.

Space Wolves Turn 3

The Space Wolves heavy weapons erupted from their lines. The Whirlwind's missiles streaked onto squad 1 as they crouched on the hill, blowing apart more than half the squad. The survivors scrambled franticly in search of cover. Lascannon after lascannon struck the front of Russ 1 scoring and blistering the frontal armor but failing to penetrate. The crew was just picking themselves up from the last blast when they were knocked flat again by plasma blasts against the rear armor from the scouts who were sprinting towards them.
"Stratin, get him out of here!" Sergeant Grelf yelled as pointing at the bleeding form of Trooper Merklin who had now lapsed into unconsciousness. He looked back just in time to duck below a shrieking chainsword. Growling with rage he threw himself back into the fight.
Ducking in and out to avoid the clumsy swings of the Ogryn attacking him, Brother Kiel sliced at it repeatedly with his chainsword delivering several stinging blows that had little apparent effect. The massive claw that slammed into the beast a moment later with a sickening splatter had a markedly larger impact sending the broken Ogryn flying into the ruins. Cheered on by Brother Kiel's remaining two Grey Hunters, the Venerable Dreadnaught rampaged into the rest of the Ogryns. Its power claw smashed right through their pitiful defenses leaving two more as bloody corpses. Vezdrog rolled underneath the blow from the dreadnaught and came up fighting as Brother Kiel and his Grey Hunters rushed at him. The circling Grey Hunters stabbed and slashed him repeatedly and he was covered in deep, bleeding cuts. His vision swimming with loss of blood he bellowed with rage and pain. As Brother Kiel darted in, slashing with his keen edged sword, Vezdrog's meaty hand darted out and caught the whistling blade. Ignoring the agony as the razor sharp edge dug into his hand he leaped forward and crashed into Brother Kiel, crushing him into the dust under his massive frame. The blackness creeping into his vision overwhelmed him as Vezdrog faded into unconsciousness.

Gue'vassa Turn 4

Sergeant Tanik and his men fired on the three Blood Claws charging their pillbox. Hissing plasma melted through the chests of two and Tanik dropped the third with a hellgun shot to the face.
Multi-laser blazing 2nd squads chimera moved behind the Whirlwind. The first shot blew off the turret and the second took out the tracks. The Ogryn's chimera drove at the Long Fangs, fire blazed out from its twin heavy flamers incinerating two of them.
Dodging a slicing chainsword, Sergeant Grelf battered aside a blocking arm yelling "For the Emperor" at the top of his lungs he stabbed his sword through the weak neck plate and out the back. Twisting the sword he completely severed the marine's head.
Shouts and the hiss of plasma alerted Major Thanar to the scouts charging the Leman Russ. His command squad charged after him releasing gouts of flame that fried two scouts before he reached them. A point blank bolt pistol shot hit Trooper Firdar in the chest plate knocking him to the ground. The other trooper with a flamer took a face full of plasma, leaving only a blackened stump. Finding himself surrounded Drakon desperately spun his force weapon in sweeping strokes to parry the scout's attacks. Captain Rastalan and Trooper Relf charged in. Taken from behind two of the circling scouts were crushed by Rastalan's powerfist.

Space Wolves Turn 4

Rolling on the ground to put of the flames, the two remaining Long Fangs tried to shoot the chimera bearing down on them, but the lascannon went wide and the krak missile failed to penetrate the frontal armor.
The Razorback destroyed Russ 1 despite the protection of the pillbox. The Venerable Dreadnaught stomped forward firing with its lascannons blowing 1st squads chimera back several yards, its smoking hull still blocking the main path.
Sergeant Grelf and Brother Yarin traded blows that glanced off each other's armor.
Captain Rastalan backhanded one scout who flew three feet before he landed. Stepping over the broken moaning form he punched the last scout in the chest, smashing bones and organs to a pulp.

Gue'vassa Turn 5

The Ogryn's Chimera rumbled forward and charred the last two Long Fangs. 2nd squads chimera started advancing back towards the checkpoint while firing at the surviving Grey Hunters. Heavy Bolter, multi-laser, and heavy stubber rounds streaked up the field killing one of the two remaining Grey Hunters. The command squad ran through a gap between the wrecked chimera and the hill to crouch behind the pillbox. Sergeant Grelf and Trooper Ritian were unable to would Brother Yarin as their blows either glanced of his armor or hit the bike.

Space Wolves Turn 5

Turning its turret around as it drove towards the checkpoint, the Razorback blew up the Ogryn's chimera. The Venerable Dreadnaught and the sole survivor of Brother Kiel's squad advanced towards the checkpoint.

Gue'vassa Turn 6

Russ 2 blasted the Razorback 5 feet into the air. It landed several yards away streaming smoke and flame as fuel cells and ammo caught fire. Amazingly four of the passengers were able to crawl out with only minor injuries.
Running out from behind the cover of the pillbox, Trooper Relf fired his meltagun from the hip, blowing the leg off the venerable Dreadnaught. See that the Dreadnaught was about to right itself and resume firing, Captain Rastalan snapped off a shot from his plasma pistol that knocked the Dreadnaught back to the ground and blinded it.

Space Wolves Turn 6

Coughing on smoke and stumbling out of the wrecked Razorback, Brother Wulfcan crouched and surveyed what was left of the column. The Venerable Dreadnaught appeared to still be functioning but it was lying flat on its back and unable to fire. Only four other Grey Hunters were left alive as they scurried to find cover from the incoming plasma and hellgun shots. Everyone else was dead.

Conclusion

Drakon charged into the remaining Grey Hunters. He lowered his honor blade like a spear and disemboweled the first Grey Hunter, the force weapon easily slicing through power armor and flesh. Freeing his weapon he parried a blow from the next Space Wolf. Rolling under the next blow he swung his honor blade around in a circle, cutting the Grey Hunter off at the shins. Finishing off the shrieking marine he watched as Captain Rastalan crushed a Grey Hunter with his powerfist and Trooper Relf incinerate another with his meltagun. The last Grey Hunter charged at him from the side firing off a shot with his bolt pistol that impacted his carapace armor with a painful thud but failed to penetrate. Bringing his own bolt pistol into line he fired as fast as he could into the charging marine. Shot after shot deflected off the power armor until one found a week point in the neck plate, blowing a fist sized hole in the armor. The marine slumped to the ground his lifeblood pumping out of his neck as he bled out on the ground in seconds.
Major Thanar surveyed the destruction, seven new hulks burned across the field and the cries of the wounded echoed across the field.
Sergeant Grelf with Troopers Stratin and Ritian approached from behind the stand of trees supporting several wounded men. Survivors from 3rd and 2nd squad filtered in. Sergeant Tanik quickly began setting up a med station inside the command post while Trooper Relf radioed for medical teams. Sergeant Grelf walked up to Drakon and reported, "One of the bikers got away sir, and we've got more wounded back there."
Nodding Drakon gestured at Trooper Stratin, "Grab four men and come with me". A minute later they were rumbling along in second squad's chimera. They reached the spot where second squad had been hit with a plasma cannon and Drakon blanched at the hideous burns covering the bodies as they loaded one man who was still clinging to life. Gruesome burns covered the lower half of his torso and the skin on his face was peeling as if he had been badly sunburned. Moving past shattered monuments and burning trees they arrived at the site of the close combat between the Ogryns and Grey Hunters. Most of the Ogryns had been killed instantly by the dreadnaught; Drakon recognized the body of Vezdrog by the distinctive implants on his skull. Rushing over and checking for a pulse he realized the Ogryn was still alive. He shouted for the rest of the team and they were able to drag the massive Vezdrog into the rear of the chimera. Moving back over to where Vezdrog had fallen he knelt next the body of the marine who had been crushed underneath the Ogryn. As he took of the Space Wolf's helmet to check for a pulse Brother Kiel's eyes flickered open, he tried to speak but one of his lungs was crushed and he couldn't get enough air so all that came out was an incoherent whisper. Looking the marine in the eye Drakon said solemnly, "You have fought with honor and will be treated with respect as a prisoner. Rest and heal your wounds now." One of the other Grey Hunters was also still alive and both marines were loaded into the chimera. Further search found a trooper from squad three sitting slumped against a ruined monument. His leg a mess blood and bone he sat in shock staring off into space. Carefully carrying him back to the chimera they drove back to the command post where medical teams had arrived.
Wandering through the ranks of wounded Drakon ran into Sergeant Grelf who was carrying a power axe. "Where did you get that," he asked pointing at the axe. "Picked it up off one of one of those guys out there by the rhino. Fine piece of work isn't it." Grelf replied. Nodding Drakon continued his circuit of the wounded.
Gazing once more across the devastated park Drakon again vowed to rebuild it after all this was over, if he was still alive then.

Closing Comments

My plan for this battle was to have 3rd and 4th squads come in from the sides and try to distract a few of his units from the objective and if they could kill something with their meltaguns, so much the better. I was hoping that the Ogryns would be able to take out the Grey Hunters and they probably would have if the Venerable Dreadnaught hadn't showed up. 2nd squad was hit with a plasma cannon and fled off the board before they could do anything. Overall I'd say that the distracting units did pretty well. The Ogryns held up the Grey Hunters a turn and made the dread turn around and come back to help even though they were destroyed. Sergeant Grelf and squad four held up the bikers the whole game, which helped. The chimeras were really effective when they got loose in my brothers heavy weapons. All the distractions made it so his assault came in piecemeal in nice small groups that the storm troopers could easily take down before they got into assault range. Major Thanar, my sanctioned pysker, was a bit of a disappointment. Despite having four attacks, I was completely unable to hit anything with him.
My brother's only comment was that Venerable Dreadnaughts completely rule in hand to hand, this was the first time he has every managed to get it into hand to hand combat.

Here is the second narrative battle report I wrote.
Some of the parts about Sergeant Tanik won't make a complete sense unless you've read my short story  Sewer Crawling.

Deployment

This is viewed from the perspective of the advancing Gue'vassa. The center of the board is full of razor-wire, tank traps and several wrecked vehicles.
The Space Wolves had one small, unoccupied, bunker in the back right corner of their deployment zone with the Whirlwind parked next to it. The Wolf Lord and his bodyguards started next to the Whirlwind and next to them was a large bunker with a communications dish occupied by the Long Fangs. In front of the bunkers the ground was littered with razor-wire and sandbags. Grey Hunters 2 deployed in the sandbags in front of the large bunker. Grey Hunters 1 deployed in front of them in their razorback, next to the Venerable Dreadnaught. Blood Claws 2 deployed in their rhino with the Rune Priest in the upper left corner. Blood Claws 1 deployed in the Land Raider Crusader in the upper right corner.
Squad 1 deployed in their chimera in the far left corner. The Ogryns deployed on the opposite side. Six inches up the edge was the Command Squad, six inches after them was Russ 1 behind a wrecked truck. Six inches after the Russ was Squad 2. The Basilisk deployed in the far right corner behind a large lookout post. Squad 3 set up next to their chimera in some ruins on the back edge. Russ 2 deployed hull down behind a small rocky outcropping about a foot to the right of them.

Pre-game Comments

My plan was to use my ordnance to blow holes into his defending troops. Squad 1 was meant to take the small bunker and attract attention. Russ 2 and Squad 3 were supposed to lure the rhino and crusader out of position. My melta armed deep strikers, squads 4 and 5, were there to take out the crusader and whatever other vehicle was threatening my main advance from the right. The Command Squad and Ogryns were supposed to take out the scattered survivors of the defending infantry squads. Will it work? Read on and find out!

Introduction

Sergeant Grelf crouched low to the ground as he sprinted to the cover of the trees. Throwing himself down into a small, muddy depression beside Troopers Stratin, Ritian, and Vordal he whispered, "What do you see?" "Looks like a heavy weapons team up there on that big bunker. They've got about 40 more marines and a couple of tanks defending it also, Sarge," reported Trooper Stratin as he handed Grelf the magnoculars. Poking his head over the lip of the ditch, Grelf inspected the Space Wolf positions through the trees using the magnoculars. Power armored marines milled around the communications array, several vehicles were parked nearby also; Grelf swore when he saw the land raider, "Damn it! How are we going to kill that thing?" he muttered under his breath. As he continued to survey the enemy positions his mind wandered back to the mission briefing.
Major Drakon Thanar walked over to a large worn, black, chalkboard and began addressing the assembled NCOs. He wasn't a particularly imposing figure without the bulk of the carapace armor adding to his size. He had an average frame that had been filled out with muscle by years in the military, though he couldn't be much more than 5'9. His youthful face looked haggard and strained after weeks of fighting and he had bags under his eyes. Not exactly the type of heroic officer they put in the recruiting posters mused Grelf; still, he gets the job done. The regiment had seen a lot more victories than retreats under the command of the major and Colonel Havelock.
The major had a crude schematic of the compound surrounding the Aydar Communications Center and was explaining the attack plan. "The Aydar Communications Center will be immeasurably useful, for us, in making contact with the resistance groups in the city, while the Imperials need it to coordinate their defenses. Because of its strategic importance they've stationed the Space Wolves to guard it. We beat them last time, but then we had the advantage of ambushing them. This time they'll be ready for us, so we'll be in for a tough fight. Recon reports that they've fortified the area heavily and set up couple of bunkers. If possible we want to capture those bunkers intact; avoid damaging the main bunker with the satellite array at all costs, if it's destroyed then we've failed," he explained. "Sergeant Atsby will attack from the left," he said gesturing to the young sergeant seated next to Grelf. "Sergeant Grelf, you'll be attacking with me and Vezdrog from the right," he continued. "Sergeant Tanik, you will hold your position once you get into range and provide fire support. We're hoping that you and your men will draw off their tanks and assault troops, so be prepared to get the Hell out of there if they get too close. The rest of you are in the second wave; I'll vox you when we've secured the bunker and you're tasked with driving off any remaining defenders. We attack at 0700 tomorrow, so make sure your men get a good nights sleep. I've borrowed a squad from first battalion so you don't need to bother with sentries tonight; I want everyone getting as much rest as possible," he finished.
Drakon watched the NCOs file out of the room as the briefing ended. Vezdrog was last in line and was about to exit when Drakon tapped him on the arm. Turning Vezdrog rumbled, "Sir?" "Are you sure that your all right? You took some nasty hits in the last battle," inquired Drakon looking at the vicious pink scar running across the palm of the Ogryn's massive hand. Clenching the hand into a meaty fist Vezdrog replied, "Doc fixed me up good. I can fight jus fine." "Well your not fully healed yet so try to be careful," said Drakon as he dismissed Vezdrog. Drakon turned to Captain Rastalan, gestured at the departing figure of Vezdrog, and said, "Of course, the last time I told him to be careful he charged his squad straight at a Carnifex!" Rastalan smiled ironically, "He's an Ogryn; not afraid of anything, couldn't care less if he's wounded in a dozen places as long as there's some enemies to stomp. And they did kill that Carnifex."
Grelf was walking through the cool evening air towards they squat concrete barracks when Trooper Stratin spotted him and jogged over. Not bothering to salute he asked, "So what's the plan? We all know that there's an attack planned, so where's it gonna be?" Grelf replied, "Comm Center, we're going in at 0700 tomorrow to capture it. Also looks like the Wolves are defending it so we're in for a fight." Stratin took in the news without comment but his stomach clenched at the thought of going up against the Space Wolves again. That biker had knocked him to the ground in the last battle and would have gutted him if Grelf hadn't severed the marine's head at the last moment. Grelf interrupted his flashback asking about the condition of Trooper Merklin. "Surgeon said that he'll be back on the line in a few weeks. Said that the slash missed his lung by about half an inch otherwise he'd have died within minutes. He'll have a nasty scar across his chest to remember those bikers by though." Grelf nodded and said, "Well at least he's alive, more than some others can say." With that Grelf turned and walked entered the barracks, he was going to need the rest if he wanted to get through the next day alive.
Back in the ditch Grelf handed the magnoculars back to Trooper Stratin and said, "We'd better get back and report to the major."
Drakon nodded grimly as Grelf gave the report, "About what we expected. Get to your chimera we're attacking in three minutes.

Turn 1 Gue'vassa

Major Thanar took up his customary spot in the turret of the chimera manning the pintle heavy stubber. The Space Wolf sentries were scrambling back to the bunkers and the entire complex was swarming with power armored marines rushing to their defensive positions and transports. Lets stir things up a bit more, he thought as he ordered aloud, "All units open fire!" On his left Vezdrog's chimera gunned its engines and charged forward, smoke billowing out to conceal the tank. The Russ's opened fire blowing away tank traps and fortifications, but failing to kill any marines. A high pitched whistling preceded the impact of the earthshaker shell as it struck the razorback like a comet, crashing through the steel hull and blasting the marines boarding it back into the sandbags. Heavy bolter, multi-laser, and heavy stubber shots from the chimeras peppered the Space Wolf positions with flying death. Drakon watched as squad 1's chimera trundled forward spewing bullets and incandescent light at the Long Fangs on the roof of the communications bunker. Jerking the stubber into line, Drakon sent shot after shot into the Long Fangs, savoring a grim smile as three dropped from the combined fire.

Turn 1 Space Wolves

Space Wolf Rune Priest Grimr Hawkeye rallied his disorganize Bloodclaws and directed them to the waiting rhino. "In the name of Russ move yourselves! The enemy is upon us!" he bellowed over the thunderous shelling. Bullets whizzed around him as he sprinted up the ramp into the back of the rhino. A multi-laser shot glanced off the ramp just as Brother Siggi was pulling it shut; the blast dented the metal plate, but failed to puncture through, leaving such a severe dent that Siggi was left staring in shock at the impression, which was only centimeters from his nose. More shots poured in, denting the armor and stunning the driver.
Wolf Guard Brother Skeggi popped his head out of the top of the crusader and spied the chimera that had stopped the rhino straight ahead. "Take out the chimera," he ordered the multi-melta gunner next to him. The land raider lurched forward just as the gunner took his shot; jarred, the super heated blast impacted the upper right corner of the frontal armor, rocking the vehicle violently and tearing a gaping hole, but doing no serious damage.
Sergeant Tanik ducked behind a ruined doorway as hurricane bolter shells pelted the ruins his squad was hiding in. A second too slow, Trooper Chiker had half of his head blown away by an incoming bolt shell, splattering Tanik with blood. Over the thundering blasts of the hurricane bolters and screams of his men Tanik heard the keening wail of an incoming whirlwind shell. He tried to yell out a warning but it was lost amidst the cacophony of battle. Wailing like a banshee the rocket impacted in the center of the ruins, throwing two storm troopers into the air like rag dolls with its powerful blast. Ducking deeper into the corner behind the door, Tanik huddled against the wall, shielding his face with his arms, as tiny bits of shrapnel and stone peppered him, finding chinks in the carapace armor and inflicting a dozen stinging wounds. He heard the shrieks of lascannons and a massive explosion off to the right, near where his supporting Russ was supposed to be. Bolt shells ricocheted around him and exploded against the stone wall behind him, he desperately wanted to become a mouse and burrow into ground to escape the horror of the screaming shells and screaming men. Suddenly the withering hail of bolts ceased and the smoke from the explosion blew away. Tanik lowered his arms and peered into the ruins, nobody was screaming anymore, he saw only a few torn bodies sprawled across the ruins, nobody was moving.
Wolf Lord Jorggen Anderslecht ordered his bodyguard of terminators forward to support the Grey Hunters. The Wolf Guard on his right pumped a steady stream of assault cannon shells into one of the advancing chimeras.

Turn 2 Gue'vassa

The heavy jolt of the assault cannon shells impacting the armor of the chimera knocked Drakon back into the steel rim of the turret painfully. Jumping back down into the main hull he quickly gave the order to advance at full speed and deploy smoke.
Vezdrog was anxious to get out the chimera and bang some heads. Grunting an order to his squad he pushed down the rear hatch and jumped out to the still moving vehicle, closely followed by the rest of his squad. Unaware that his cargo had just hopped out, the driver kept the chimera on course while firing a blistering gout of flame into the fortified positions of the marines. The turret gunner added to the devastation with his own heavy flamer; together they reduced the front sections of sandbags to smoking ash, along with the two Grey Hunters who had been unfortunate enough to be caught in the fiery blasts. A second later a second basilisk shell crashed into the trenches, leaving a massive crater filled with the broken bodies of half a dozen marines.
Sergeant Atsby's chimera continued its steady trundle towards the smaller bunker, his squad riding in the rear, firing out of the open roof hatch in support of the chimera's main guns. The sheer volume of las rounds and bullets ate away at the thick ceramite wall protecting the remaining Long Fangs, the remainder of whom were systematically blown apart with repeated heavy bolter and hellgun shots.

Turn 2 Space Wolves

Explosions and machine gun fire echoed across the battlefield. Sergeant Tanik poked his head cautiously around the corner of the door; the land raider was turning a moving down the line towards the wrecked Russ. He made a break for the cover of the stunned chimera; a marine manning the multi-melta spotted him and shouted an order at the gunners below. The closest rack of hurricane bolters rotated to target him. As the bolters reached him, Tanik hit the dirt. Clambering back to his knees he half crawled half sprinted over the rubble, using the low ruined wall as cover from the murderous hail of bolter shells. Diving forward he made the more substantial cover of an ancient ruined pillar. Crouching and pressing his back to the rough stone he prayed silently as the deadly shells blasted away chunks of the pillar, showering him with shards of rock. He cowered behind the pillar with the bolter shells exploding all around him; second after agonizing second ticked by. Relief washed over him like a warm wave as he slumped to the ground. His leg bumped into a body, which groaned pitifully. Tanik quickly pulled himself up and turned over the prone form of the man he'd just bumped; he recognized the face as that of Trooper McDowd, his eyes staring blankly at the sky. McDowd had a gaping would in his shoulder that was bleeding profusely, staining his chest plate red with blood. The area in which he had been lying had a pool of blood almost a foot wide. "Shtlk!" Tanik muttered, realizing that McDowd would bleed out soon if he could not staunch the flow.
"Full speed for the source of that damned shelling!" Grimr yelled as the rhino lurched forward towards the copse of trees and the watchtower that appeared to be hiding a basilisk.
Lord Jorggen strode confidently through the blasted fortifications, ignoring the hot lead and incandescent light that streamed in from the advancing chimeras, "To me, men of Fenris! To me! Take the fight to them! Charge". With a resounding cry the scattered Grey Hunters rallied around their lord and charged through the torn redoubts and splintered wooden blockades, bolters spitting death at the chimeras bearing down on them. The Venerable Dreadnaught stomped up along side them, crushing the barriers under its mighty feet as it loosed a searing beam of pure white light at the second Leman Russ tank, punching through the flimsy cover provided by a wrecked truck and blowing up the massive tank in a shower of flame and shrapnel.

Gue'vassa Turn 3

Tanik took the first aid kit off the side of his helmet. He took out a dose of morphine and jabbed it into the wound before tying a crude bandage across McDowd's bloody shoulder to stem the bleeding. A stray bolt shell exploded next to him, delivering another tiny stinging shrapnel wound on his side. I've got to get him out of the line of fire he thought frantically as he looked around desperately for some solid cover. The crackle of a multi-laser alerted him to the fact that the chimera was still nearby. He carefully lifted Mcdowd across his broad shoulders and managed a modest shambling jog as he made for the chimera. Suddenly the chimera lurched forward over the ruins towards the communications bunker; a second later a protruding metal pole that had previously served as a support beam for the roof now served as tank trap as the chimera impaled its left tread upon it. "Damn right! You aren't going anywhere" screamed Tanik as a covered the rest of the distance and began pounding on the back door of the chimera.
The Ogryn's chimera drove straight into and over the barricades, scattering Grey Hunters and severing the line. Spotting five marines caught out of the fortifications and the rest of the Wolves, Vezdrog bellowed a challenge and charged straight at them, blasting away with his rippa gun. The rest of his squad roared and gleefully charged after him.
Drakon's command squad piled out of the back of their chimera. The chimera sped off to the side, swerving to the side, blocking the path of the dreadnaught. He spoke into the micro bead in his helmet, "Sergeant Braddock, prepare to drop. I need you to take out the land raider and the dreadnaught".
"Affirmative sir", Sergeant Braddock turned to his drop teams standing ready next to the grave chutes aboard the orbiting frigate Alteria's Hope. "Corporal Dameon, your team is dropping by the dreadnaught. You'll have one shot to take it out before it turns on you so make sure it counts". The coordinates for the battlefield were already locked into the nav computers, so it only took the teams scant seconds to enter the precise location and launch themselves down towards the planet.
Drakon watched a moment as the fiery trails of the descending drop troops streaked down from the sky like flaming meteors before activating their parachutes and gliding safely to the ground. Vezdrog's roar snapped him back to the situation at hand. His command team charged at the isolated Grey Hunters.
Trooper Relf and the other two flamermen washed the Space Wolves in fire; two fell screaming and beating at the flames melting away their armor as Captain Rastalan incinerated another one with his plasma pistol. They slammed into the Grey Hunters at the same time as Vezdrog's Ogryns. Drakon snapped of a point blank shot with his bolt pistol at the marine in front of him. The shot pinged off the armored chest plate of the marine. The Space Wolf snarled and swung his sword in an arc towards Drakon's head; Drakon deftly spun his honor blade in a rapid circle, spinning the marine's swipe off to the side. Drakon quickly stopped the spin of his blade, reversed its direction, and stabbed it straight forward into the marine's gut. The psychic force held in the honor blade parted the thick armored plates as if they were water flowing to the sides of a ship. Stumbling back, the marine collapsed to the ground coughing up blood.
Vezdrog swung his rippa gun in a sweeping arc over his head, bringing it down with crushing force on the blocking arm of a Grey Hunter. Then he brought up his knee into the groin of the marine, who buckled over in agony, then smashed his elbow down onto the marine's skull. Knocking the marine to the ground with point blank shot of his rippa gun, Vezdrog brought his heavy booted heel down onto the helmeted head of the marine. Grinding it into the ground and cracking metal, flesh, and bone.
Drakon led his command squad and the Ogryns in a sweeping advance that brought them behind the cover of the Ogryn's chimera.
Sergeant Braddock hit the ground and rolled back up onto his feet. Around him the rest of the team were battling with their parachute strings to get their weapons into line. The land raider was less than five meters away from his struggling squad. "Shoot it! Shoot it! Braddock screamed as the hurricane sponsor rotated to target his squad. A blast of searing heat from his right incinerated the sponsor. Braddock looked back; Trooper Cowen was down on one knee, the snow-white strands of his parachute trailing out behind him, preparing to take another shot. Another super heated melta blast went by Braddock; this one hitting the side of the land raider, tearing and melting its way through the armored hide of the tank. Marines began spilling out the front of the tank. The melta blast had ignited small fires within the tank; hot flames licked at the massive cans of assault cannon ammo. Seconds later the entire land raider exploded, showering the escaping Space Wolves with fire and shrapnel.
Corporal Dameon ripped his knife out and severed the constricting cords of his parachute. Looking around he saw that the dreadnaught unaware of the attackers, and meltaguns, behind it. "Fire! Fire! Fire!" Dameon shouted to his team as they struggled to with their parachute strings, knowing that if the beast turned around and noticed them it would be over. A pair of meltagun blasts hit the monstrous machine in the back, going through the rear armor as if it was made of paper. The entire upper half of the dreadnaught exploded, leaving a pair of solitary legs to topple to the ground. Dameon breathed a sigh of relief; that just about used up his allowance of luck for the next month.
1st Squad and Sergeant Atsby ran down the ramp of the chimera as it drove behind the small bunker. White-hot bolts of plasma punctured through the thin rear armor of the Whirlwind. Atsby peered through the gaping hole left by plasma, a few pitiful sparks leapt from the burning control consol, and a pair of figures in charred armor, one slumped of the consol and the other lying limp in the gunnery post.
The chimera swerve abruptly to the side and Sergeant Grelf and 2nd Squad bundled out next to the communications bunker.

Space Wolves Turn 3

Brother Skeggi pushed himself off the ground, shaking his head to clear the spots dancing in front of his eyes. Around him the rest of the Blood Claws were picking themselves up and staggering drunkenly from the land raider. Another box of ammunition went off in the wreck raider, showering him with shrapnel. Through the smoke he saw the storm troopers also picking themselves up from the explosions. Drawing his bolt pistol he shot one shouting orders to his men, "There they are! Charge!" He sprinted towards the panicking storm troopers, flexing his powerfist in anticipation; around him the Blood Claws rallied and charged after him.
Trooper Cowen flew backwards from the impact of the bolt shell and lay unmoving on the ground. Trooper Pelas raised his meltagun, but another shot took off his head in a shower of gore. Then the Blood Claws were on them. Braddock ducked the first swinging chainsword; fell back and then parried the next swing with his own sword. He stabbed out at the berserk warrior. A powerfist grabbed his blade and crushed it effortlessly. Brother Skeggi punched out at the sergeant and connected with the head. The impact knocked Braddock back several feet. Skeggi looked down at the corpse. The head was a pulped mess of flesh and blood; there was no way to tell that it had once been a face.
Brother Ofeigr charged the chimera that was driving towards his squad, crushing the sandbag and wooden barricades under its trends. A stream of heavy stubber bullets flew at him from the turret. He hit the dirt and rolled to the side of the tank, slamming his powerfist again and again into the treads until the lumbering vehicle stopped in its tracks. The turret rotated and Ofeigr found himself looking down the barrel of the turret heavy flamer.
Corporal Dameon hit the dirt and crawled forward, frantically trying to reach the cover of a sandbag wall. Assault cannon and storm bolter rounds peppered the ground around him and whizzed over his head. To his left Trooper Caelis went down shrieking in agony. He reached the safety of the sandbags and looked back. Another one of his men was sprinting towards him when a stream of assault cannon shells impacted his chest, blasting him off his feet. An assault cannon shell shot through the sandbags and over his head. Hands trembling, he fumbled his helmet off. A small line of scratched metal and paint ran down the center. He couldn't suppress a maniacal giggle at the absurdity his luck. Well, that's got to be all the luck I've got for the next bloody year, he thought.
The explosion of the whirlwind caught Jorggen's attention. "Behind us! They've taken us from behind." Jorggen and his bodyguards turned and lumbered towards the storm troopers unloading from their chimera. One of the terminators finally succumbed to repeated multi-laser hits as they charged at Squad 1. One of the wolf guards slammed his chainfist into the side of the chimera, cracking the armor. He hit the side again and penetrated through. The energies in his chainfist set off multiple explosions as he punched through. Suddenly the entire front of the chimera exploded as the ammo stores went off.
Lord Jorggen easily slaughtered the three storm troopers who charged at him with sweeping swipes of his frost blade. Sergeant Atsby jumped at him from the side swinging his power weapon. The sword hit the protective shielding of the Belt of Russ and bounced off. Jorggen backhanded Atsby with his bolt pistol, knocking him to the ground. Atsby rolled to the side, just as Jorggen's frost blade buried itself in the earth, and jumped to his feet. "Stand your ground! For the Greater Good stand your ground," he bellowed at his wavering men as he jumped back at the Wolf Lord.

Gue'vassa Turn 4

Ofeigr stared down the barrel of the flamethrower. For a moment he could see every minute scratch along its deadly matt black body, from the flickering flame of the pilot light to where it attached to the turret. Then there was a hiss like a snake as the fuel flowed through the weapon and reached the pilot light, igniting into a billowing flame that engulfed his head. Ofeigr screamed and fell over backwards, frantically flailing at the flames burning his upper body. The turret rotated back and forth, belching flames across the Grey Hunters who desperately fell back to escape the deadly inferno. Their panicked retreat took them out to the side of the chimera; where Vezdrog's charging Ogryns slammed into them. Reeling from the fire the Grey Hunters were completely unprepared for the ferocity of the massive Ogryns. Vezdrog emptied his clip into the stomach of the first marine, and then brought the gun down onto the marine's head. Around him his squad was decimating the Grey Hunters. One Space Wolf broke off and fell back. Snarling Vezdrog ran after him, catching him from behind and bludgeoning him to death with his rippa gun.
Grinrakon rounded the chimera just as the Ogryns finished off the last of the Grey Hunters. Roaring with bloodlust the Ogryns charged off in search of new victims. "I thought I told him to be careful," muttered Drakon to himself.
Atsby staggered under the force as he parried Jorggen's strike. Around him the Wolf Guard Terminators were ripping through his squad. Powerfists crackling with scarcely restrained energy punched through their bulky carapace armor as if it were made of plastic instead of hardened ceramite plates. Atsby swung his sword across at waist level, but Jorggen parried easily and returned the strike with a blow that nearly jarred the sword out of Atsby's hand.
The rear hatch of the chimera opened and Tanik pushed by the startled driver. He gently laid Mcdowd's body on the floor. "Get the med-kit". The driver hurriedly handed the med-kit to Tanik. He grabbed a handful of long white bandages and pressed them into the wound as hard as he could. Dark red blood oozed out from the edges of the bandages and dribbled down McDowd's side and onto the cold metal floor. "Grab some more bandages and help me!" he shouted at the driver. The driver jumped at Tanik's voice and rushed to press another wad of bandages on top of Tanik's. Tanik looked into the pale face of the driver. All of the blood had drained from the man's face and his clear blue eyes were wide with shock. He looked like he could throw up at any second. His hand's shook violently as he pressed weakly on the bleeding wound. "Harder! Press as hard as you can, his life depends on it!" The pale young man grimaced and leaned down harder on McDowd's bleeding chest.
Tanik put all of his strength into pressing down on the wound, desperately try to stem the flow of blood. Images flashed through his mind. The gaping wound in Porter's armpit. Porter's blank eyes staring up at him. His hands soaked in the blood of his friend.
"No, not again. Not again," he whispered.

Space Wolves turn 4

Wolf Guard Brother Skeggi surveyed the battlefield. The rhino was circling to attack the basilisk and one of the chimeras was maneuvering to block its path. Guardsmen and Ogryns were swarming the main communications bunker. He couldn't see Wolf Lord Anderslecht anywhere. It was going to be a long charge through difficult ground to reach bunker. With a feral roar he sprinted forward followed by his blood thirsty Blood Claws. "Destroy the chimera! If Wolf Priest Hawkeye doesn't kill that damn basilisk then we'll never retake the bunker!" A hail of bolt pistol rounds impacted on the side of the chimera. Most were stopped by the armor, but several punctured through; one hit the driver in the elbow. The man collapsed onto the floor shrieking in agony and the tank rumbled to a halt.
Jorggen brought his frost blade around in an upward arc, deflecting Sergeant Atsby's sword wide.
Atsby watched in horror as the Wolf Lord retracted his sword for another strike. There was no way he could move his own sword in time to parry; no way to dodge. Glittering with cold light the frost blade stabbed forward. Atsby tried to fall back out of the way but the point was faster. Agony shot through him as the sword pierced his stomach, puncturing through his carapace armor with ease and pushing right through his back. He stood impaled on the freezing blade, his lifeblood gushing out, staining blade, armor and ground with bright red blood. Jorggen slid the sword back out and Atsby slumped to the ground.
Jorggen turned from the dying sergeant and watched as one of his bodyguards crushed the last of the storm troopers in his powerfist.
He looked back at the communications bunker. More storm troopers and half a dozen Ogryns were bearing down on them.

Gue'vassa Turn 5

"Go!" shouted Grelf as the krak grenade exploded, blasting the bunker door open. Stratin and Vordal rushed in and took up firing positions on either side of the door. A few startled techs in local militia uniforms froze where they sat working. "Hands up!" An armored man waving an axe and backed up by a squad of armed soldiers commands a lot of respect and the techs immediately responded. "Ritian, Stratin, keep an eye on them." The rest of the squad followed Grelf up a stairwell and onto the roof.
"Vezdrog get back here! Our mission is to hold the bunker, not chase after the enemy!" Drakon screamed into his comm link. With a grumbled "Yes, sir" Vezdrog began herding his bloodthirsty and disappointed Ogryns back to the cover of the barricades.
"Lieutenant Tomelchek, we've secured the bunker. Bring in the second wave."

Space Wolves Turn 5

A basilisk shell screamed down and blew the small bunker to pieces. Lord Jorggen shielded his face with his hands as his squad was covered in shrapnel. He looked over the field. A large squad of Blood Claws was charging away from their destroyed land raider towards the bunkers. He also saw another half dozen armored vehicles coming in behind them.
"Jorggen to all units. Incoming enemy reinforcements. Fall back and regroup before we're overwhelmed."

Conclusion

Major Thanar picked up the comm link. "Shas'o Vor'enal? Major Thanar reporting. We've driven off the Space Wolves and captured the communications bunker intact. We've already begun sending out messages to contact local resistance forces." The Tau Shas'o's voice came back through the comm link clear and calm despite the mild static. "Excellent Major. This planet is now one step closer to joining the Greater Good."
Sergeant Grelf and Corporal Dameon walked over. "Braddock and Atsby are dead sir, and Tanik is missing," reported Grelf, "We found one wounded man where his squad was, but not his body." "Keep looking," said Drakon. "Casualties were heavy enough today without losing Tanik too."
Sergeant Tanik gradually noticed that the flow of blood running down McDowd's side had slowed to a trickle. Remembering Porter he worriedly checked for a pulse. It was slow, but steady.
"Hey, the shooting's stopped," exclaimed the driver.
Tanik lifted his head and realized that he was correct. "Get on the comm and call a medic." He ordered.
Trooper Sergev, the platoon medic, ran through the hatch a minute later. He knelt by McDowd and proceeded to check pulse and breathing. "Is he going to be okay," said Tanik worriedly. "Well, he seems to have stabilized. So unless he's got internal injuries I can't see he why shouldn't."
McDowd's eyes flickered open a crack. "You look like Hell sarge," he whispered in a faint voice.
"Don't worry, most of the blood is yours."
 "Thanks. That's comforting."
"Don't talk, you need to rest," interrupted Sergev.
Tanik turned and exited the chimera. He activated his comm link and called Major Thanar. "Sergeant Tanik reporting sir."
"Where the Hell were you Tanik?"
 "Helping with the wounded sir."
"Well get over here. We've got work to do. Thanar out."

Closing Comments

Well the Russ' were rather useless this game, except as victory points for my brother. The basilisk however did its job perfectly. It killed seven or eight Grey Hunters, the razorback, and a bunker. The chimeras put out an obscene amount of shots as they moved forward (nine each). And once they dropped off their cargo they proved very annoying by blocking my brother's movement and breaking up his units with tank shock. The first three turns of the game were a huge slaughter fest. Each of us lost about half our army. The last two had a lot more maneuvering and only a few casualties. My brother's mistake was sending his Blood Claws off to assault me. If they'd remained sitting around the bunker as a counter assault unit, I would have likely have gotten bogged down or destroyed. As it was, the small units of Grey Hunters were easy meat for my Ogryns and command squad.
