With a lot of Super-heavies taking part in games of Apocalypse these days many people aren't sure how to deal with them.

A common view on Super-Heavies is:
"How the heck do i destroy them, they have really tough armour and i've got to kill them several times before they actually die. Also, they have void shields and power shields which make them immune to my fire!"

My view is more on the lines of:
"Super-heavies aren't worth the points with a few exceptions such as Klawstompas, Stormlords and Revenant Titans. They have the ability to kill people over a large area with 7/10" blasts so all I do is spread my units out. Their SD weapons are just stupid and since almost all SD weapons are blasts then my flyers are immune to them."

I am wanting to alleviate the fear that people have of playing super-heavies by giving them a way to destroy them with a minimum of fuss and best of all... You can do it all from your armies codex Smiley

Destroying Titans with Void Shields or Power Fields
Titans may be a rare sight but with the Stompa release we should expect to see more popping up around and about- one warning when playing Stompas- keep away from them unless you want to be carved up like a pot-roast.

Stage 1
Target the titans void shields and power fields with S6-8 weapons with multiple shots such as autocannons, Vulcan mega-bolters or shuriken cannons to name a few- note that Orbital Bombardments are effective at this. Once you have taken all 4 of the Reavers void shields you can precede to stage2. (Remember that void shields can be collapsed by any glancing or better hit)

Stage 2
Target the titan with S8+ weapons such as lascannons, demolisher cannons, bright lances or railguins. If you have a vortex grenade then the titan is a tempting target and is a good place to throw it at but you have to get in close or you could simply charge the titan with a power fist armed unit such as Nob Bikers. Once the titan is down to 1 structure point, proceed to stage 3.

Stage 3
The titan has been crippled already and no you're ready to deliver the death blow. Firstly get all your units at least 18" away from the Titan for safeties sake. Secondly tell one of your kind big guns to target the big vehicle. Thirdly FIRE! with any S8+ weaponry in range- hopefully this will destroy the titan.

Destroying Super-heavies such as Baneblades
Baneblade sized super-heavies are some of the easiest to defeat because of their shortage of structure points but this doesn't make it an easy task.

Stage 1
Firstly, you will need to have some big guns around with high strengths- 8+ will suffice. Lascannons and Bright lances are ideal for destroying Baneblade size tanks but I would suggest laying your hands upon some S10 weapons with long ranges if possible as to keep out of the enemies firing range- railguns are the only weapon from a codex with a long enough range for this job.
As with titans you should now target the super-heavy with these guns and remember to record weapon destroyed and other damage inflicted, because if you inflict a drive damaged/ weapon destroyed result and your opponent's super-heavy has no weapons or is immobilised then it loses a structure point. Once the opponent is down to a single structure point, proceed to stage 2.

Stage 2
Now the super-heavy has most likely lost a few weapons and has suffered a drive damaged result so you are now about to deliver the killing blow. Make sure you have no units within 12" just to be safe if the vehicle does some exploding. Now shoot at the Super-heavy just as you normally would in stage 1. With a bit of look the opponents super-heavy will now be in a wreck- perfect for reassembly for your personal uses.

Super-Heavy Flyers
These are such a rare sight that it's hardly worth giving tactics for them; also I have never played one in a game so can't really help but I'll try

When attempting to destroy super-heavy flyers you will almost always be hitting on 6's and then facing armour 10 (the former is annoying but the latter is great) which means that any weapon with multiple S6+ shots is what you need to use- my advice is Shuriken cannons but three tau broadides are also going to be able to do a lot of damage because they only have a -1 modifier on the damage chart. Since it's almost impossible to get a 6 on the damage charts when playing against super-heavy flyers you need to be getting 4's because any drive damaged result is counted as a chain reaction result. One other thing you must consider is that flyers reduce your weapons range by 12" when you're firing at them so long-range weapons are always better.

Other Notes
Titan Holofields are a real nuisance because you can't destroy them- if facing them then all I can say is keep up sustained fire so you can punch some shots through those pesky shields.

Target one super heavy at a time! When shooting at Super-heavies people will often fire a little bit at each one which means your opponent won't be taking as much damage overall (would you like to play 2 Baneblades or 3 Baneblades without there Heavy Bolters and Baneblade cannons.) When choosing which super-heavy shall receive your fir try and target one that's most threatening to your army.
e.g. if your opponent has a Shadowsord and a Stormlord you would shoot at the latter if you were playing a swarm army but the former if playing an elite army with lots of tanks.

All of the above attacks where i suggest shooting are only one option- your other is to charge the enemy with power fists/ klaws or any other weapon that is S9+. Also remember that when charging you will be hitting most veichles on 4's but with others it might be 6's or auto-hits and you will also receive more attacks in combat than you would with shooting.

Conclusion:

The best things to defeat Super-Heavies are other Super Heavies Smiley but normal codex units are also very effective and often more-so.

I hope this has been helpful to all of you who are fearful of Super-heavies.

For those who wish to want to play effectivelywith super-heavies then read this on the games-workshop website which is all about super-heavy tactics.
