Since the beginning of the Necron's time, they have tormented many armies, Tau being one of them. They are brutal, tough and know how to fight. This is a problem for many Tau players. This guide is to help you out against the Necron race and show you the best way to fight them. This guide is best used for 1,000+ point battles.

You've picked your army, now what?

 Conclusion

Introduction

Necrons are often feared because even their standard troops are tough (For troops), and even if you kill them, there's a 50% chance that they'll get back up again. Should you worry about this? Well, yes actually- although not as much as some players do. If you look at the Necron Codex you'll notice that their save is low and their leadership is high, but you'll also notice that their points cost in very high. This means that even though Necrons are tough and can last for quite a while, the amount of models in a Necron army is nearly always lower than the amount of models in your army. This gives you a numerical advantage that you can use to your gain time and time again.

Picking your army

When playing Necrons, a balanced army is needed. Below is a list of Tau units that are good against Necrons, and what you should do with them:

Tau Commander

T/L Plasma Rifle, Shield Generator.
Join him with a Crisis battlesuit team and follow their tactics. (See below)

Crisis Battlesuits

Plasma Rifles, Drone controllers w/ shield drones, Fusion Blasters.
Giving Crisis suits Plasma Rifles and Fusion Blasters mean that you have powerful shots that will negate Necrons armour save. Also keep 2-3 shield drones with them to stop them getting attacked. Use these to do jump in-and-out attacks against the enemies elites and fast attack units and also Tomb Spyders if the enemy has taken them.

Stealth Suits

Team leader with 1-2 shield drones.
Although stealthsuits haven't got any armour piercing weapons, a full squad of them gives you 18 shots which should kill quite a lot in a battle. Keep them near a crisis team and use the same jump in-and-out tactic as them. Use these to kill anything that is getting too close to you. Keeping shield drones on them means that they are hard to spot, and then hard to kill.

Fire Warriors

Giving the Fire Warriors no equipment keeps their points cost down. Target these at the enemies troops and scarab beetles.

Kroot

Kroot are best if you take 20 of them. Use the Kroot Charge tactic in battle and this should help you out, if the enemy gets too close.

Broadsides

2 w/ target locks, 1 w/ shield drones.
Broadsides are the truly effective things against Monoliths and C'Tans.

Hammerhead

Ion Cannon.
Ion cannons negate the enemies armour save and also strong enough to kill most Necron units. Use it to kill anything that gets too close to you.

Notice the lack of fast attack...Tau fast attack is best used against weaker armies and taking them against Necrons is a waste of points. Aim to get at least 2 squads of Fire Warriors, 1 full Broadside squad and 1 Crisis suit squad. This should lead to a strong, yet balanced army.

You've picked your army, now what?

When deploying make sure that your Fire warriors are fairly close together so that you can overlap firepower and make sure they can see the enemy troops. Next deploy your Kroot next to, or behind them to use the Kroot Charge tactic. Put your Broadsides and Hammerhead into a position where they can see and hit most of the enemy. This is your main army, the part which should stay where it is and just shoot the enemy!
Then get some battlesuits and put them on the edge of your deployment area. Use these to do jump in-and-out attacks to weaken the enemies' elites and fast attack. Deploying like this means that you've got faster units (Battlesuits) weakening the enemy, and then the main army killing anything that gets too close.

Target Priority

As with every army, Necrons have some very good units which must be targetted and killed quickly. Below is a list of what you should kill first, and why: (List goes from biggest to smallest threat)

Destroyers/Necron Lords with destroyer body

Fast, Good gun which is capable of killing lots in a turn. Don't let it get near your main army, take it out with your battlesuits. Aim to kill this before anything else. Kill it with all the Battlesuits you have.

Heavy Destroyers

Fast, Strong gun which can kill your Broadsides, Hammerhead and Crisis battlesuits with ease. Again, kill it with your battlesuits before it reaches your main army and in range of your broadsides. Kill it with all the Battlesuits you have.

Wraiths

If these get into combat with you, you're dead! They can move 18" which means they are capable of 'Surprise' assualts.Do not overlook this model, it can end the game if it gets into combat. Kill it with all the Battlesuits you have.

Monolith

Strong armour, big and mean looking. This means it should be killed quickly, yes? No. Even though the monolith can be fairly scary, don't do what many do and kill it before killing anything else. Wait until most 'fast' units in the army are dead, and then destroy it.

Scarab Swarms

Ranking this unit in the 'Top 5' deadly Necron units may seem fairly wierd, but these are cheap, can come in fairly big swarms, are hard to kill (They have 3 wounds) and if they get into combat with your front lines, they will stay there for a while, which means you can't fire at the enemy. Kill these with Fire warriors before they get into combat.

Tomb Spyders

Once these are dead, you can kill an entire Necron squad and be sure that they won't get their WWB rolls. Also they are great in combat, so don't let them too near to you! Use broadsides to take these out, and if theres more than 2 of them, use your other battlesuits (Crisis, Stealth etc) to take them out.

Necron Elites

They are good, and strong and Flayed ones can deep strike in any mission. Despite this they only have 1 wound, are expensive, slow and come in fairly small units, this means that they are great to kill with Fire warriors (Mass firepower) and Hammerheads (Ordanance).

Warriors/Necron lord not on destroyer body

These 2 modelds are best used when you put them together in a squad. The reason for this is, that the Warriors act as bodyguards to the Lord and this works very well. The Warriors are hard to kill and usually stay around for a while. This provides cover for the lord until he gets into combat. Once the Lord is the combat, your ultimately dead- especially if Necron warrior get into that combat as well. Once most of the army is dead, kill them.

C'Tans

Although these are at the bottom of the list, that doesn't mean they are no good. They are very good but usually it's better to ignore these! The reason is that they are both very expensive (Points wise) and so this will decrease the amount of models in the Necron army. Instead of trying to kill this model, leave it and attempt to phase out the Necron army- it works much better.Do not fall into another common trap, and try to kill this. It's not worth shooting.

Conclusion

You will notice above that some weaker units are listed at the top of the list. Remember the list isn't 'The best Necron unit' it's a list to show what Necron unit can be the most deadly. You will notice that all the fast things in a Necron army are at the top of the list, and the slow things at the bottom of the list. This is because the faster things in a Necron army can catch you off guard very easily and if Necrons get into combat with the Tau, that's pretty much the game over! The Necrons have a big staying power and so combats with them will be slow and in the end.. you'll probably lose.Avoid it!
