Commander Dram'Ka (Shas'o Commander)

Dram'Ka has his own article with a brief history and my home-made special rules. .......... This is the guy who started it all. He has been the prize and pride of all the 40k models I ever used. He survives a surprising amount of times, despite all the odds against him.

Ethereal and Bodyguard (Ethereal)

This unit rarely survives, but they have never failed to wipe out a unit they targeted. There is nothing more "cheesy" than BS:4 Tau, and the Honor Guard bringing those pulse rifles at rapid-fire range are no exception!

No Name (XV8 Crisis Team)

I haven't actually named this battlesuit yet. He's my anti-infantry killer and he does it very well. When coupled with his Bodyguards, they can mow down scores of infantry. On one occasion, his fusion blaster did come in handy. ..... There are three variations, in one list he is a Shas'vre loner, in another, he is Dram'Ka's bodyguard, and in another, he is a Shas'El Commander.

Number/Squad: 1 XV-8

Wargear: Airbursting Fragmentation Projector/Cyclic Ion Blaster ..... TA; Iridium Armor, Stimulant Injector (Shas'vre Mon'at) ..... Fusion Blaster, 2 Gun Drones (Dram'Ka's Bodyguard) ..... Fusion Blaster, 2 Marker Drones (Shas'El)

These two guys have wrecked quite a bit of havoc and I've used them to pretty good use. The most memorable times were when I could use the Failsafe Detonator!

Stealthsuits (Stealth Team)

This unit is just pure awesome. They have never made up for their point cost, but they have gotten fairly close several times. They are great against the hordes, but have also proved their worth against MEQ as they follow up their massed shooting with a charge. If you add it up, that's a LOT of attacks!

Team Iron Fist (XV8 Crisis Team)

This unit was inspired by what I saw in a lot of sketches of Tau battlesuits in the Tau: Empire Codex; a burst cannon, plasma rifle, and a gun drone hanging around. I felt obligated to make something like this, and thus came Team Iron Fist. ..... This unit is interesting to say the least, though it's performance is so far... so-so. It's designed to work with Pathfinders by using the markerlights and hit on 2's and maybe reduce some cover saves, making them a versatile unit. They are good at taking out infantry, heavy infantry, but more importantly light transports and are supposed to be able to assault after they're done. They last a very, very long time with 6 Shield Drones in that unit, allowing them to make up for their cost throughout the duration of the game. I am thinking about giving one model a flamer instead of the plasma rifle and take a multi-tracker, which will really reduce the point cost and increase the anti-infantry effectiveness before a charge. ......... The unit was inspired by what I saw in a lot of sketches of the Tau race. You constantly see a gun drone hanging around a Battlesuit with a plasma rifle and burst cannon, which I thought was an odd combination and felt obligated to support the pictures with the usefulness of such a suit.

Number/Squad: 3 Battlesuits, 9 drones

Wargear: Each with plasma rifle, burst cannon, 2 shield drones

Other upgrades: 1 suit with flamer, burst cannon, multi-tracker ; ...... all 3 with 1 gun drone, plasma rifle, and burst cannon (189 points)

Kroot Carnivores (Kroot Carnivore Squad)

I haven't used this unit in a long, long time, and rightly so. They have some good potential, and I don't judge the Kroot for being a bad unit (they're not; it's just hard to properly use them). They just don't work very well in my strategies. They often find themselves isolated, alone, and fending for themselves. I've had some good times with the Kroot though.

Eyes and Ears (Pathfinders Team)

The Pathfinders were the first unit that I looked at and heavily studied upon the introduction of the Tau race. I took two months of study and play-testing, and failed a few times with them in the first few battles. The problem my brain had struck was, "These guys sound like scouts that should have sniper rifles. What's their use?" It finally dawned on me that they were a strategic unit, not a tactical one. In the games my opponents don't waste their firepower on them, they prove extremely pivotal in the game. They have notably dealt heavy damage against an Eldar army I played recently, have pinned a 9-man Assault Squad of Marines, and killed two Deep Striking Lictors. They work closely with the rest of my army to enhance it's firepower and effectiveness.

Attack of the Drones (Drone Squad)

Every now and then, I feel the urge to get in some Gun Drones. I have a LOT of them, not just from the boxes of models I've collected, but by accident, I didn't realize just how many I got from those boxes, and asked for 8 more on Christmas, to which an order was wrong, and I ended up with 10. Thus, I own 40 Drone Models. Over the years I've lost bits and pieces here and there (and find them again). I never field too many of them any more no thanks to the way Kill Points go.

Lesser Important (1) (Hammerhead)

Lesser Important is rarely shot or assaulted before his other two brothers are. Suffice to say, he has an extremely high survivability rate. He's been a great asset to my army taking out light vehicles, whittling down MEQ units, and punishing basic troop choices that get too close or Deep Strike. I always loved the Ion Cannon since the Tau first came out, and was excited that it was actually 15 points cheaper than the original. ..... All of my Hammerheads used to be armed with SMS until 5th Edition came around when the LOS rules changed and people were getting closer a lot faster.

Lesser Important (2) (Sky Ray Missile Defense)

Killer (Hammerhead)

I have been using Hammerheads since the Tau came out. My very first Tau model I got was Killer. The Christmas picture back then is me hugging it in the fetus position on the couch. The Hammerhead was my answer to the impossible Falcons and Wave Serpents back in 3rd Edition as previously, I had nothing to combat them effectively. ..... Killer is good about making up for his point costs as a tank hunter and infantry killer. He has served me well and is a force not to be reckoned with.

Invincible (Hammerhead)

Invincible was a later addition to the army, but has proved me well with his evident name. Not melta weapons, not bright lances, not Terminators, not even Gargantuan Creatures in Apoc have been too successful at easily killing this model. The drawback is that he's not all that good a shot as he moves around the battlefield hoping he doesn't die, squinting his eyes instead of looking around for a mass kill.

Hellfish (Devilfish)

Hellfish proved his worth when he made up for his point cost and became the star and key player 7 games in a row. He deserves this name on account of the countless units that he has destroyed, wrecked, splintered, and broken. I trust him to my Pathfinders and my Ethereal's Honor Guard. In his early career, he was a high harassment unit that I used as a moving shield and who's gun drones killed or wounded everything they looked at. Since 5th Edition, I find that I can get a lot more worth out of my Devilfish than by just sticking on 2 Seeker Missiles.
