Dal'yth Sept

Thanks to Alex Marlow for this.
I originally got the idea for white Tau at the beginning of the original Tau Codex. Mark Owens's pathfinder team and tanks I thought looked awesome. So I decided to model an army on my own on the basic colour scheme of that (and incidentally use the same Tau sept as him, Dal'yth)
Painting a White XV8
- The unfortunate thing about white is that it takes about 5 layers before you can fully cover darker colours, and by that time it looks very uneven and blotchy. So to overcome this I sprayed the main model white first (in separate pieces).
- The next and most obvious stage was to apply chaos black wherever it needed to be placed, again i mainly got ideas from the codex about where to paint the darker parts of the battle-suit.
- Then using the very old paint, ghostly grey which I had a stash of. I painted in the nooks and crannies. Although this isn't easy sometimes, if the grey is watered down sufficiently, you can wipe off any access paint which covers the unwanted parts with a finger, and it also provides a cleaner finish! Another thing done to make the battle-suit more interesting was to paint random panel's codex grey adding some variety to the model.
- The Final painting stage was applying the detail, I used a detailed brush to create the sept marking in red and also the small crescent moon shape of the eye, I also used this brush to highlight the grey panels in fortress grey (the white didn't need highlighting, what's whiter than white!)
- And finally was gluing the model together, however for XV8's which were on a stand I did not glue the XV8 to the stand, for storage purposes

| When i see Tau in white armour, it reminds me of the Clones from Star Wars, i wonder if anyone would use the rank colours on the clones on Tau?

| Alex, there is a way for whites! drybrush your black-undercoated model with for example Astronomican Gray, wait until it dries out, dilute white paint with a bit of clean water and paint all white destined areas in couple of layers. Paint is smooth, and you can do a very effective shading, covering raised areas with more layers of white dilute.

"i recomend this to intermedait lvl painters"
"taugundrone", As you said before on other paint scheme comments, Your white colours are slappy, so don't recommend something you can't do.
When it comes to Dal'yth paint scheme, i must say i love white paint work on them, and although I understand nice contrast between white tau and red kroot on the battlefield, i wouldn't go for it. But on the other hand, those kroot are quite ok. Nice work!

Nice Battlesuits! I\'ve been trying to work out a way of doing them to match in with the rest of my Tau, but I thought too much white might not work. Looks like I\'m going to have to give this scheme a try. Did you try adding any of the blue/grey camo to them at all? I\'ve been a bit stuck as to whether/where to use that on them.
Cheers,
Mark

I use this color scheme as well, except my kroot are grey.
It makes great snow camo.
I never thought of watering down paint to get into the cracks though.
Thanks for that tip!

| oh yeh about the white coats, GW are bringing out paints with higher pigment so that light colours can be painted over black in just 1 or 2 coats.

| you didn't do much painting, you just primed them white. i see mad flaws like plastic bits you didn't cut off, spots on the arms you actually missed while painting. good idea, do more touching up on it, actually paint the white areas skull white and put some gloss on it when you're finished
