The smoke cleared as the Fire Warriors prepared for the worst. They knew before them were the remains of a hard bitten Guard squad. As they braced themselves for another salvo of pulse fire, the Imperial guns opened up. They sang a song of death as a handful of Fire Warriors exploded into a storm of blood.
Ethereal Dath'Eil searched back through his memory to the day that it had escalated into war. It was a dewy crisp morning when two Tau Manta ships descended upon the world. A hundred Fire Warriors deployed in practised precision in a matter of a few hours. They then awaited the arrival of the first humans to make contact.
After a few days, the first human transport arrived over the horizon, a vast armoured column moving rapidly down the wide open jungle pathways carved out from the jungle around them. As they neared the clearing that was serving as the Tau's main strong point, they slowed to greet their new arrivals. Dath'Eil had awaited this moment with quite anxity. A hiss of hydraulics signalled the opening of the rear hatch of the command Chimera. The Fire Warriors in attendance stood with their weapons lowered but ever ready for action. The form of Colonel Chavesh strolled out of the halted Chimera.
He was a siney man with a small beard dressed in the grey dress uniform. He was clearly not a front line warrior, but his rank did show upon his weathered features.  Dath'Eil knew that this was the man to whom to speak with in order to resolve the pressing issue. As the two esteemed leaders exchanged cursory glances, it was apparent that both remained fixed upon each other eyes. The cold deadlock of stares continued to for further two minutes until Dath'Eil broke the uneasy silence with a motion to be at ease to those Fire Warriors that had raised their firearms.
"It is my fondest wish that we can resolve this issue without bloodshed" ushered Dath'Eil. The Imperial commander was taken aback but the a calm composure of this xenos. "It appears then that the only due course to achieve such is for you to leave" spoke the Guardsmen CO after a full minute of silence. "We cannot do that due to our own pressing needs, this world, as you may be aware is rich in resources, which is why were are here" deemed the Ethereal. "Then it appears that we both have the same use for this world, but it was already owmed by the Imperium before you your 'empire' was created."
"Then change might be a good thing for this world, and it also seems that we have nothing further to talk about" concluded Dath'Eil. Within the day, the Imperial forces had moved upon the Tau and had begun to fighting at the command of their CO's.
A shell erupted to south of the Fire Warriors position, it was clearly ment to miss the Fire Warriors completely but also failed to hit it's intended target that was further south. As the remaining Fire Warriors ducked for cover, another shell erupted nearer this time, as the boom of the basilisks in the distance completed their firing cycle. They knew that yet more shells were coming but, they had to move back or otherwise be swamped by Guardsmen. As they made their break, the trailing bolts of lasgun fire flashed around them as the Guardsmen hurried to chase them.
As soon as they caught sight of a lone Tau Commander, his bodyguard shredded by previous shell hits, they spun around and begun gunning down those they could just about see through the thick fog of shell smoke. Yet as each Guardsmen fell, it seemed two more took his place. Aided by the firepower of nearby Commander, his augmented battle suit was unable to find any targets worth targetting through the thick smoke. Off in the distance, the Fire Warriors could hear the faint echo of heavy bolter fire, but they also knew that some of the Imperial firepower had been dispatched to cover the Guardsmen's advance towards the Fire Warriors.
An armoured form erupted through the grey mists of the battlefield, it's own exhaust smoke adding a black plume to the already thick fog. It's turret had been badly damaged by the battle. It's turret mounted weapon posed no threat now, yet the Fire Warriors knew that it also featured a secondary weapon. As they broke from their practiced firing positions to engage the Chimera, it's main weapon burst into life. The boom of the shells shook the Fire Warriors as several of their already shattered numbers died instantally as large calibur heavy bolter shells hit home. The return fire from the Fire Warriors pattered off the hull in a helpless fashion.
Turning in the air, the Tau commander brought both weapons to bear upon the enemy of the Greater Good. The weapons spat death to the armoured beast, silencing it's engine in a volley of fire. Yet it was close enough and the Fire Warriors were in serious danger. They worst fears were realised as soon as the first of their foes stepped out from the smoking Chimera.
Five large creatures that resembled humans poured out of the Chimera, accompanied by their commanding officer. These creatures we massive compared to the Fire Warriors, more akin to a Tau Commander in size then any human they have seen. "Ogryns! Charge!" shouted the human accompanying them. Just as the Fire Warriors were able to spit their first salvo of fire upon them, felling one in it's tracks.
Drifting back, the Commander watched the massacre of the Fire Warriors as the Ogryns ripped them apart one by one. As the Ogryns bore down upon their tiny opponents, the Commander knew what must be done after the bloodshed. As the first of the lead Ogryn slashed through the helmet of the last Fire Warrior, the Tau Commander sqeezed the trigger gently from within his battlesuit cockpit. The weapons spat death once more.
The battle had been bloody and would continue for a further 28 months before the Adeptus Astartes had the arrived. By then, it was too late. The Tau had already taken over and was in their complete grip...
