The imperial embassador, a grizzled old commander by the name Kacheovaski, waited for the tau envoy impatiently, he wondered if they were trying to mock them by making them wait. It was unusual to negotiate with xenos but desperate times called for depserate measures. They were on a planet on the eastern fringe bordering their space and tau space. The bulk of the imperial forces were at armagedon staving off Abadon's second invasion and when the Tau had seen the oppurtunity lept on a planet hopping campaign conquering system after system. Now Selusa Secondus was all that stood between them and the rest of the Selusa system, and it had grounded down to a seige of their fortress. After a heavy loss of life and several attempts to bipass the fortress the Tau had asked for negoitions, the imperials tired of fighting after only a couple months of war eagerily agreed.
The facility was built like and ice berg it had a fort with high walls and barracks on the surface as well as network of tunnels for miles beneath the surface. This was the last holding place on this planet and when it fell the rest would as well, then the rest of the system all agricultural or idustrial worlds would easily fall.
No matter, he thought. In the long run the system would mean little and as soon as Abadon's rampage was quelled the imperial forces would come to retake this space. Nothing stood before the might of the empire long, and the tau would be no different.
Quite suddenly an aide came in followed by a group of unarmed fire warriors, two body guards and a shas'o commander. Kacheovaski had picked the small barren concrete room they were in now deep within the confines of the fortress to intimidate the fire warriors and discourage them from trying anything. It had no apparent effect though as the two body guards removed their helmets and held them under their arms revealing stern stoaic expressions. The commander presently seated himself not bothering to take off his helmet. The souless red lens in the middle of the helmet caused a chill to run up Kacheovaski's spine, but he hid any fear presently and folded his hands together before putting them on the table before beggining to speak.
"Negotiations will begin now." The old commander started as he gazed into the red lens. "The fighting has grounded to a standstill at this fortress and we will not surrender it without a fight, and though you may take it the imperial fleet will come some day and there will be heavy repercussions for such an invasion of Imperial Space."
"You listen to me."The tau commander said in perfect english. "If you give up now you will save the lives of all your men and can back out, there is no need for a needless loss of life on both sides. You'll be saving the lives of the civilian's on your agricultural and factory worlds as well."
Kacheovaski closed his eyes, the tau commander knew to appeal to his loathing for the meaningless loss of life, but he supposed it was a trait all good commanders must have. But was the battle hopeless? A meaningness loss of life? He slowly shook his head. His duty was to the emperor first then his men, he had to remember that."As a servant of the Emperor, I'm asking you once more to abandon your seige and leave this system at once."
"You are blinded by your faith in this "Emperor", surely if he cared about you he'd rather you retreat and live to fight another day"The Shas'O said calmly.
The commander took it as a personal insult and slammed his fists down on the table before standing up, knocking his chair back and yelling."THE EMPEROR IS LORD OF ALL MANKIND! AND I WILL NOT SURRENDER AN INCH OF HIS SPACE!"
The Shas'O hadn't moved a muscle and for a moment Kacheovaski thought he had scared him stiff but it was merely a rare moment of hesitation, something that caused both the body guards to look at eachother with startled expressions Kacheovaski thought this was an effect of his outburst and was rather pleased with himself before the Shas'O rose from his seet and pulled out the release pins at the bottom of his helmet, there was click, and he slowly removed his helmet. The aid and Kacheovaski gasped as he revealed inch by inch tan colored flesh until his entire face was revealed. He was human, a young man no older then 35 with a mat of messy light brown hair a thin face broad lips and face fitting nose where there was bump in it from being broken. His lips were set in a thin line and then the tips curled into a slim smirk. "All of man kind, is he?" He replyed with a hint of bitter sarcasim. Before turning his back on the two men and starting towards the door the body guards followed shortly in line behind him. "We will spare as many as possible." He called out over his shoulder as they walked down the hall and away.
The aide who was more infuriated the the commander at this point pulled the las pistol from the commanders belt and raised it to fire. The commander turned and plowed into the aide slamming him against the wall. "No you fool! Harm him and none of us will live!"
