"Objective markers?" I hear you say! "What on earth are they?"
Well, objective markers have many uses, and come in many guises.
As I will show you below, objective markers can come in many forms. The most common of these is a round base, usually decorated, but missing a model. It can be used to signify a capturable objective in-game, or for use as wound markers. Similarly, you can use them to represent your armies in campaigns that require maps.
The two markers I am going to show you are fairly simple, and both have several uses. The first finds its simplest role in sitting with your army. When on display, it can be used to show off your army badge, sat beside your commander. Alternatively, it could represent a status, for example fleeing, or being pinned (though I would not suggest using your army badge as a fleeing marker!). The second can be used as a booby trap, or a potential objective.

Marker 1

To construct an objective, wound or status marker, all you need is a spare base and your bits box. While trawling through the sea of Dark Angels parts that I have stashed in my painting area, I came across two pieces that started one of my infrequent good ideas. The first idea was fairly simple, but yielded the desirable results. Read below for a stage by stage guide, with finished pictures.
PictureDescription
[gal_img]1111[/gal_img]Start with a base, as shown here. The lighter circle is the top, the darker the sides.
[gal_img]1112[/gal_img]Proceed to apply sand to the base using PVA glue (in the finished photo I used flock, but sand will work much better)
[gal_img]1113[/gal_img]Spray your entire piece white.
[gal_img]1114[/gal_img]While you wait for your base to dry, take the piece shown on the left, and cut along the red lines. Make sure to keep the cut clean, or the final result will be less defined.

When the base is dry, place the pieces on the base as shown, leaving a small gap between each wing and the sword. DO NOT GLUE THEM DOWN! If you wish you can use a small amount of blue tac to keep them down - just make sure it does not show from above.
[gal_img]1116[/gal_img]Take your black spray, and spray from directly above.
[gal_img]1117[/gal_img]Wait for the spray to dry, and remove the sword/wings from the base. They should come away cleanly.
[gal_img]1118[/gal_img]Tidy up any small mistakes there may be with a little Skull White / Chaos Black.
[gal_img]1119[/gal_img]If you wish, at this stage you can outline the sword, drybrush the sand etc, but for the purposes of this tutorial we'll leave things as they are.
This base could be used simply for display with an army, as a campaign-map marker for your army, or as an army specific counter in game. You could also try free-handing numbers on the top or sides, for use as wound markers.

Marker 2

Now we move on to our second, more ambitious marker. This one requires the same materials as above, namely a base, some PVA glue, a random piece from your bits box and some flock. A knife/file is also recommended, unless you want to bite your models to pieces! This one was completed over a few days, because I had to leave my painting area to wait for PVA glue to dry.
PictureDescription
[gal_img]1120[/gal_img]Take the piece you intend to use, and cut/file it down to an angle, as shown with the red line. While this isn't the exact piece I used, almost all the spare accessories are viable options.
[gal_img]1121[/gal_img]Blue tac it to your base, and apply PVA glue around it, as shown. The red section is the bit, the whiter section the PVA glue.
[gal_img]1122[/gal_img]Flock or sand your base as shown, leaving the unglued area around the bit free.
[gal_img]1123[/gal_img]Now spray the entire thing black.
Gallery image
Paint the area around your bit Bestial Brown, and the sand/flock as you normally would. You can also begin painting the bit itself at this stage.
[gal_img]1125[/gal_img]Apply several layers of 50/50 PVA/water to the Bestial Brown area, making sure to get none on the surrounding base. This will make the brown look shiny, as though it were muddy water. You can finish off painting the base/bit at this stage too.
And here we have photos of a finished base. Note that flock was used instead of sand, which would have given a better result.
[gal_img]1126[/gal_img]
[gal_img]1127[/gal_img]
[gal_img]1128[/gal_img]
This piece could be used as an impromptu 'booby-trap', an objective (an ancient relic perhaps?) or something as simple as a scenic base.
The very best thing about both of these markers is that they were made without any real conscious thought while I was waiting for a couple of other pieces to dry (the second took longer due to PVA, but the guide was still written several days after). You could easily knock up a large number of these in a few days at most! Those that don't require more than a layer or two of PVA glue can be done easily in a day, and there's no excuse not to make any. Virtually every army out there has little trinkets you can use, and these add a great deal of character to an army.
