As the Tyranids moved steadily towards a Tau sept, they encountered a small Imperial outpost on a moon near one of the last few Tau colonies in the area. The Imperial guard stationed there had been studying the Tau and were (as always) almost pointless as the Tyranid forces stormed the moon's main research station. However, the Tyranids disabled the station's radar cloaking device, and the Tau almost immediately started picking up the Imperial distress signals and sent a small battle force to the area to investigate. The attacking Tyranids were but a small splinter fleet, and had few creatures capable of fighting, so they had mainly attacked by stealth. The Tau, however, destroyed the Tyranid's main ship, and they were grounded.
The Tau then sent a small detachment of troops to destroy the remaining Tyranids, and they landed in a large clearing on this forest moon, with the research station close to the centre. The clearing was in fact swampland, and the battlesuit transport Devilfish was damaged from landing in the water, so it couldn.t make it to the fight without repairs, and as it would take another hour for the Tau to get in a repair team, the Fire Warrior Devilfish, along with a flying stealth team and Shas.O Crisis Commander, finally made it to the base. There they set up and waited for the Tyranids to come out.

Forces

Tau

  • 1 Shas'o commander with fusion blaster, missile pod and multitracker
  • 1 team of stealth suits 1 with fusion blaster, 1 with burst cannon, 1 team leader with burst cannon, HW drone controller, 1 gun drone and 1 marker drone.
  • 1 squad of Fire Warriors - 5 with pulse rifles, 4 with pulse carbines, 1 Shas.ui team leader with pulse rifle, markerlight, and HWDC with 2 GD.
  • 1 Devilfish with sensor spines, targeting array and gun drone squadrons.

Tyranids

  • 3 warriors - 1 devourer, 2 deathspitters, flesh hooks, extended carapace
  • 8 genestealers - rending claws, flesh hooks, extended carapace
  • 8 gaunts - 3 devourers, 1 something (I can.t remember what it was), extended carapace
  • 8 hormogaunts - flesh hooks, extended carapace
  • 1 carnifex - 2 pairs scything talons, 1 pair crushing claws, scything tail, extended carapace.

Deployment

[gal_img]943[/gal_img]The Tyranid player hides his carnifex (Car), genestealers (G) and warriors (W) behind a large wall, with the gaunts (T here, because they used to be known as termagants, and G is already in use by the genestealers) and hormogaunts (H) in an alcove in the side of the base. The Tau (that's me) hide the commander (C) behind a random building on the side of the pond (this seems to be a hatch, but the Tau have battles to fight now, and this will have to be investigated later if at all) with the 'fish next to him, and the stealth team (ST) on the other side of the fish and finally the Fire Warrior squad behind the stealths. My opponent wins the turn roll, and graciously (and possibly rather stupidly) allows me to go first.

Turn 1

[gal_img]944[/gal_img]The Tau's 'fish moves forward and deploys its gun drones, alongside a cautiously advancing stealth squad, and the FW Definition: Forge Worldtake up positions behind the stealth team. The Commander stays put, but is considering going round the back, through both types of 'gaunt, and hitting his foes from there.
The Tyranids behind the wall advance up to it. The gaunts come round the side of the building, but not far enough to be shot at. The Tau commander spots movement, and decides he will go round the side after all.

Turn 2

[gal_img]945[/gal_img]The commander engages full jetpack and storms across the battlefield. Meanwhile the 'fish hops across the lake, while its drones move off the edge of the pond (they kept falling off their stands). The troops stay put.
The genestealers line up at the wall, ready to jump over and attack and the warriors move in behind them. The 'gaunts stay put, a main tactical error in my opinion. Of course, I didn.t mention it. I.m not stupid. Or at least, I don.t think I am.

Turn 3

[gal_img]946[/gal_img]The 'fish moves forward to get within range of the end of the wall. The stealth team move to keep away from the wall, and the gun drones take up their place in front of the FW.Definition: Forge World Then, the first bit of action begins - the commander finally sees the 'gaunts and blows one up with a missile.
In fact, as far as the Tyranids are concerned, that eastern flank is the only place where anything happens. The seven remaining gaunts charge at the commander and spread out into a line, then shoot at him. Everything fails, however, even the Tyranid's doctrine for fighting, as the opposition decides against charging because the gaunts are "too c*** in close combat". Slight problemo, buddy - surely 7 gaunts would have a good chance of at least making a dent in the commander's armour? That must have been the biggest tactical blunder he made.

Turn 4

[gal_img]947[/gal_img]Three more gaunts are blasted by the commander's guns, and the remaining four run for their lives. Otherwise, the Tau do nothing, except that, for some strange reason, the gun drones somehow get to the XV25s.
The warriors, seeing the problem on their left flank, make their way into the base. Meanwhile, the carnifex and genestealers comearound the wall rather than over it. Not that this makes much difference, but still...

Turn 5

[gal_img]948[/gal_img]The Fire Warriors advance and the 'fish hops back across the pond, and together with the stealth suits and a well-placed marker drone marker light-hit manage to destroy a pitiful half of the genestealers, which pass a casualty check and a pair of pinning tests. The gun drones sidle back to cover the Fire Warriors from assault. The commander bounds forward towards the 'gaunts again and kills two more, and they run still faster in an attempt to escape. But it's a good thing the drones were there - things were about to get nasty...
The Carnifex, apparently a bit slow on the uptake, lumbers towards the old location of the 'fish. Then the genestealers leapt at the drones and shredded them, but the creatures just weren.t quite close enough to reach the fire warriors. Meanwhile the gaunts regroup and hide in their alcove in the side of the base, and the warriors are forced to take the long way round by the obstructing hormogaunts, and climb into a crater on the roof.

Turn 6

[gal_img]949[/gal_img]The troops and the 'fish gun down the last genestealers, the last alien creature getting its head knocked off by a pulse carbine. The commander leaps forward, blows the last two gaunts to pieces, and starts to retreat from the approaching warriors.
The hormogaunts decide to exact revenge for the fallen genestealers and clamber across the base towards the XV25s. The Carnifex makes its move towards the Fire Warriors around the edge of the pond, and the warriors clamber out of their hole onto the corner of the base. They shoot at the commander and prove that they are not good enough, as they don.t even wound. But then the hormogaunts attack the stealth team from behind, taking them by surprise and wiping them out...

Turn 7

[gal_img]950[/gal_img]At this stage, we are running out of time, so we decide to call this the last turn. I decide I needed to destroy as much as possible, and hit the hormogaunts with the FW Definition: Forge Worldand the 'fish. They try to run away, but crash into a wall and stop. Then the commander hops across, blasts three more hormogaunts, and sends them fleeing to the corner of the building.
The hormogaunts keep on running, and get in the way of the warriors as they climb down. Then the carnifex lumbers around the pond, and charges at the Fire Warriors, killing two and the drones, but the FW Definition: Forge Worldrun for it, getting well away from the carnifex in seconds. Then the carnifex tried to consolidate towards the 'fish, but found that it wasn.t close enough.

End

[gal_img]951[/gal_img]So, we finally have a result...

Survivors

Tau

  • 1 fully functioning devilfish
  • 1 slightly wounded squad of Fire Warriors
  • 1 unscratched Shas'o Commander

Tyranids

  • 1 Carnifex
  • 1 squad of 3 Warriors
  • Less than half of a hormogaunt brood

Casualties

Tau

  • Stealth Team: 140 pts
  • Gun Drone Squadron: 20pts
  • Total: 160pts

Tyranids

  • Genestealers: 128pts
  • Gaunts: 32 points
  • Half of Hormogaunts: somewhere in the region of 50 pts
  • Total:210 points
(Please note, as I didn.t factor in the cost of various biomorphs, it is quite possible that my score could have increased by up to 50%)
So, a minor victory for the Tau Empire (but then again it could have been major if I had added in that wargear...) and the discovery that my opponent was an "absolute noob," as another of my friends would put it. I feel sure that I could have destroyed the Tyranids, given the chance, as the Fire Warriors and 'fish could escape the carnifex on their next turn, while the commander chased off the gaunts and then attacked the warriors. Ah well, such is life. Don.t you just hate it sometimes?
