Hi,
I was thinking about scratchbuilding a centerpiece for my Tau army. I could of course just Build a Manta, but I wanted something unique. So I thought, since the Tau equivelent of a Titan is an Aircraft, I would build a huge Aircraft. Bigger than a Manta. Less of a Plane, more a flying airfield!
Here is the Fluff:
Generally, the Tau have found that Ground Based airfields are sufficient to serve as bases for the Tau Airforce. However, on the Imperial Forge World of Scalthrax IIIV, famed for the large numbers of Anti-Aircraft vehicles it produces, it was found that setting up bases on the ground was almost impossible, as the Manta's sent to Land in the Drop zones were gunned down. Though the Air Caste had the capability to destroy the manufactorums that were producing the Hydra's the Large size of the planet meant the Tau fleet was spread to thinly to refuel and rearm the Aircraft.
The WhaleShark is the largest aircraft the imperium has ever encountered. 1.5x the size of a Manta, and dwarfing the Thunderhawk Gunship, it is not generally intended for frontline use. However, during particularly Massive engagements, it can be brought forward, and it massive firepower unleashed on ground targets. Sporting a modified naval-grade Ion Cannon, and 4 Heavy Railguns, it has enough firepower to destroy an imperial scout or middle-class Titan in a single salvo. It is equipped with heavy duty Gravatic hooks, allowing it to pick up, refuel and rearm an aircraft up to the size of a Tiger Shark and set it back on its way. It can store 2 Tigersharks, 5 Barracuda's and up to 4 Orcas or 12 Hammerhead Gunships its its 4 Cargo Holds. It also has a deck capable of Carrying 72 Fire Warriors and 48 drones, plus an ethereal. The most devastating use of a Whale Shark was during the attack on a large Imperial manufactorum. The huge aircraft engaged and destroyed the Emperor Class Titan Vindictusetto Leccus, which had been firing upon the Tau forces for several days, and had caused many casualties.
